What To Watch: Spooky Fall Vibes

What To Watch: Spooky Fall Vibes

Fall is not my favorite season for a few reasons, but especially because the weather starts to turn cold. However, I love how cold weather allows us to cuddle up inside and watch movies, instead of going out into the world to be functioning adults. When it comes to fall, my favorite part is Halloween and how everyone gets very into death/creepy stuff/paranormal activity. That stuff is my shit year-round.

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite movies and TV shows that give me those cozy, spooky fall vibes. I like to enjoy these with some hot tea, but I guess you can drink coffee too (#teamtea).

Movies

Rocky Horror Picture Show

You cannot have October without “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The Time Warp is my favorite Halloween tradition - I was in a Rocky Horror shadowcast the first year of college and I’ve watched the movie every Halloween for about 6(ish) years. It’s weird, it’s uncomfortable, it’s dated, and it’s a blast. Don’t deprive yourself of the joy and get into “Rocky Horror” if you aren’t already. It’s a damn great time.

Practical Magic

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as sister witches? Sign me the hell up. Rom-coms, specially Sandra Bullock rom-coms, are my favorite type of movie. This 1998 movie is a little spooky, a little sweet, and has a lot of great lessons embedded in it. In general, it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.

Silence of the Lambs

I am not a big horror movie person because I hate jump scares, but this is a classic, not one of those cheesy ones that comes out by the dozens every year. I actually hadn’t seen this movie until last year because I was a little scared, but now, I love it. It gives me major early 90s spooky/mysterious vibes like “The X-Files,” so I’m surprised it took me so long to watch. It still is a little scary, so maybe watch it during the day, but watch it.

It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!

This is on here both for nostalgia and because it’s a great movie. It’s not spooky, but it is awesome. If you don’t watch this on Halloween every year, what’s wrong with you?

Television

American Horror Story, seasons 1-4

I love “American Horror Story,” but we can all agree that some seasons are masterpieces and some are trash. They’re all pretty spooky, but I think the absolute best seasons that fit the fall mood are Asylum (season 2) and Coven (season 3), with Murder House (season 1) as a close runner up. Freak Show (season 4) also has some good Halloween episodes and was a generally good season. The show airs every fall so there are always Halloween themes, but in my opinion, if you haven’t started the show yet, I say go to season 4 and then stop.

The X-Files

Hello, favorite show of all time. I first started watching this in the fall and it’s the perfect thing to watch while wrapped in a blanket eating snacks. I know from personal experience. Aliens, ghosts, conspiracies, unexplained phenomena - I love summer, but summer is not alien season. Fall is. I could write 100,000 words about my love for “The X-Files,” but I won’t, I’ll keep it brief: I love this show more than I love some of my friends. I’m not sorry about it.

Twin Peaks

I feel like “Twin Peaks” and “The X-Files” are siblings. “Twin Peaks” definitely paved the way for “The X-Files” and a lot of other murder mystery shows. Sadly, it was short-lived, but that makes it easy to binge watch! Transport yourself to a small Pacific Northwest town where the owls are not what they appear, the pie is off the hook, and something slightly sinister is always afoot. Watch the movie, “Fire Walk With Me,” after the first two original seasons, and then watch the return season from last year if you don’t mind a showrunner who intentionally wants you to be confused AF (looking at you, David Lynch).

Stranger Things

There are few people on the planet who haven’t seen this show, so I feel like it’s self-explanatory. What isn’t self-explanatory is where the heck season 3 is. Gimme it! I need it!! I’m going to rewatch the first two seasons as soon as the leaves start to fall and wish I was as cool as the main characters when I was a kid. Sigh.

Scooby-Doo

Just like Charlie Brown: nostalgic and not spooky, but also quality content. If you don’t like Scooby-Doo, you’re either lying or a very sad, deprived individual.
